Jakarta. Mount Soputan in North Sulawesi erupted on Tuesday, sending thick smoke and volcanic material 6,500 meters into the air.
National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said the volcano, located in Southeast Minahasa district, erupted on overnight at 2:47 a.m. local time.
“The visual observation from the Soputan volcano post in Silian Tiga village, 10 kilometers northwest of the peak, shows thick, gray smoke … the height of the eruption reached up to 6,500 meters above the peak,” Sutopo said in a statement on Tuesday.
Sutopo said the lava flow was heading to the western and northwestern parts of the mountain slope.
Despite the eruption, the alert status of the mountain remained at level three.
People are not allowed to enter a radius of 6.5 kilometers from the peak, but Sutopo said for the time being no evacuation was needed and people living near the mountain could continue with their daily activities as normal.
